HNC New style games level 4
In 2024, I began my Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Games Development at Cheshire College South & West, marking the start of my higher education journey. My goal is to deepen my technical and creative skills and take meaningful steps toward entering the games industry.
During this first year, I completed two major projects:
-
Project 1: Open World Environment – Godzilla Theme This project focused on building a large-scale game scene inspired by the Godzilla universe. Using tools such as Autodesk Maya and Unreal Engine 5, I applied modular modelling techniques and environmental design practices to create a dynamic and immersive setting. The project showcased my ability to translate concept into 3D space using the software skills I developed during my Level 3 diploma.
-
Project 2: Superhero Ability Showcase For this project, I designed a scene that demonstrated a superhero’s unique abilities in action. This involved concept development, character animation, and scene composition, culminating in a final video presentation. I found this project particularly rewarding, as it allowed me to combine storytelling with technical execution in a more refined and visually engaging way.
Throughout the course, I used Padlet to track progress, submit evidence, and reflect on my development. While written essays were part of the curriculum, I’ve chosen to focus this showcase on the visual and interactive elements of my work.
These projects were not intended to be fully functional games, but rather demonstrations of what can be achieved within Unreal Engine 5, highlighting the creative process and technical steps involved.
Unreal Engine 5 Project Highlights
Project 1 - Godzilla/Monarch Project
This PDF presents my Godzilla-themed environment project, created during my HNC Games Development course at Cheshire College South & West. The project marked a significant step forward in my understanding of Unreal Engine 5, allowing me to apply both foundational and advanced techniques to build a dynamic game scene.
Throughout this project, I successfully:
-
Designed and modelled props and buildings using tools like Autodesk Maya
-
Integrated lighting, sound, and environmental effects to enhance immersion
-
Applied modular building techniques and scene composition within UE5
-
Created supporting concept art and visual designs to guide development
The final result is a short demonstration scene that showcases my ability to combine technical skills with creative direction. While not intended as a fully playable game, the project highlights what can be achieved within UE5 and reflects my growing confidence in using professional-grade tools.

Unreal Engine 5 Project Highlights
This PDF showcases my Godzilla-themed artwork and sketchbook, highlighting the progression of my character design skills throughout the project. It documents the techniques I developed to improve my ability to draw dynamic characters and explore a wide range of shapes and forms.
While much of the early work was done through traditional physical sketches, I later transitioned to digital drawing using Procreate on the iPad. This shift allowed for greater flexibility and efficiency in refining my designs.

This PDF contains all the key work from my superhero project, where I was tasked with selecting an existing character and reinterpreting them in my own visual style. The final deliverable included a cel-shaded video demo, and while the original essays and research documents have been removed from this version, I’ve retained all the essential visual content and development work from my Padlet to showcase the creative process.
Out of the two major projects in our HNC course, this was my personal favourite. I gained a much deeper understanding of Unreal Engine through this experience, especially in implementing stylised rendering techniques like cel shading and translating character abilities into gameplay.
For this project, I chose Captain America and focused on visualising his iconic shield throw ability within the game engine. I successfully achieved this, as demonstrated in the final video.
Further down the page, you’ll also find a dedicated sketchbook Padlet containing all the artwork created for this project.

Project 2 - Superhero sketcchbook
This PDF contains all the sketchbook work and concept art I created for the superhero project. It documents each stage of development—from initial rough sketches to refined final concepts—using a range of techniques I was taught and further developed throughout the course.
As part of the project, I conducted research and wrote essays exploring cel shading and the character’s history. While those written components have been removed from this PDF, the visual work reflects the thought process behind the colour choices and artistic techniques used.
All artwork was created digitally using Procreate on the iPad, which proved to be a more efficient and flexible tool for my workflow.
